The Reverend Dr. Toussaint King Hill, Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan, the only child of Nella Mae Booker Hill and the Rev. Toussaint King Hill, Sr. A pastor, counselor, professional speaker, administrator and education specialist with extensive senior level advisory, organizational leadership, funding and graduate level teaching experience, Dr. Hill’s impact on the communities and congregations he served and the young people he mentored leaves a legacy that will bless generations to come.
Dr. Hill follows a proud family tradition of Morehouse graduates. As a member of a family whose men have followed this educational path for 4 generations, Dr. Hill graduated in 1981 with a double major in Religion and Political Science. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL where he was the first recipient of the William Holmes Borders fellowship, and he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH, where he was advised by notable scholars Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Dr. Cornell West and Molefi Asante.
During his last pastorate as the Senior Pastor at the West Hunter Street Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA, where he served for 15 years before retiring in September 2020, Dr. Hill took a special interest in mentoring and providing internship and preaching opportunities to the students in Morehouse’s Chapel Assistants Program. In fact, during his tenure at West Hunter, most years there was a current or former Chapel Assistant working alongside Dr. Hill in the church’s ministries. Not only was Dr. Hill a member of the Chapel Assistants Program while at Morehouse, he was an inaugural member of the Program which was started in 1979. There is no other cause we believe would please Dr. Hill more than to continue his legacy of nurturing and developing young men for the ministry by providing scholarships to support their educational pursuits.
Dr. Hill leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Laurel Hord Hill, Spelman Class of 1984; two sons, Toussaint King Hill, III, ‘08 (Miranda, Spelman Class of 2007) and Thaddaeus Kornell Hill, ‘11 and a granddaughter, Eden Elizabeth Hill, a future Spelmanite, no doubt.
